Tree lighting ceremony to become ‘virtual’ event

(Nov. 23, 2020) Ocean Pines announced this week that the 10th annual Hometown Christmas Tree Lighting, sponsored by Xfinity and scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 28, would become a virtual event.

Recreation and Parks Program Supervisor Katie Goetzinger said the change in plans was necessary because of public health concerns related to the COVID-19 pandemic and the recent case surge happening nationwide.

The public is asked to not attend the tree lighting.

“We felt that if we held the event, we would be spreading more than just holiday cheer,” Goetzinger said. “While we will miss seeing everyone, we will do everything we can to make this a virtual experience that’s accessible to everyone. We felt this was the next best thing.”

The tree lighting will be broadcast live on the Ocean Pines Association Facebook page (www.facebook.com/OceanPinesAssociation) starting at 6:30 p.m. on Nov. 28. It will also be made available on the Association webpage and YouTube channel, later that night.

Goetzinger said the virtual tree lighting ceremony will include a tour of all the trees sponsored by residents and businesses. Santa Claus will make an appearance to help light the official Ocean Pines Christmas tree, and sponsor Xfinity will also keep a presence during the event.

“The trees will stay up and lit through the new year, providing plenty of time for families to come out when they feel comfortable and enjoy the trees,” Goetzinger said. “The sponsors are still supporting the event by coming on Saturday to help make the lighting a virtual success.”
