Police updates: traffic enforcement, cellphone towers, and fatal accident investigation

(Nov. 25, 2024) Ocean Pines Police Chief Tim Robinson on Saturday updated the Ocean Pines Association Board of Directors on traffic enforcement, ongoing efforts to improve cellphone service, and the investigation into a recent fatal motor vehicle accident.

Robinson said since his last report to the Board in October, Ocean Pines Police have handled 138 traffic incidents, including 50 for speeding. Other violations included two cases of unlicensed drivers, one uninsured driver, and two incidents of leaving the scene of an accident.

“The officers are doing their best to keep our roads safe,” Robinson said.

He also reported two DUI arrests, one of which occurred in the middle of the day. Another concerning violation was a child safety seat infraction where a young passenger was not properly restrained.

Robinson added that the department has addressed two cases of vandalism, one domestic assault arrest, a heroin possession related to a DUI case, and two theft-by-fraud incidents.

“These fraud cases are unfortunately a growing issue,” he said.

Robinson provided an update on the department’s work to improve cellphone service in Ocean Pines, noting ongoing talks with Milestone Towers, a Virginia-based company with experience constructing towers in nearby counties.

“They’ve got towers at three high schools in Wicomico County, and we’ve been working with the administration there to review their contracts and ensure we’re being offered a fair deal,” Robinson said.

The proposal includes constructing a tower at Milestone’s expense, obtaining all necessary permits, and providing Ocean Pines with a one-time payment prior to construction. Additionally, Ocean Pines would receive 40% of monthly revenue generated by the tower.

“We’ve identified some potential sites on Ocean Pines property and, if all goes well, we’ll move forward after reviewing the contracts and proposals,” Robinson said.

On a somber note, Robinson addressed the Nov. 16 fatal motor vehicle accident on Ocean Parkway. He said the incident remains under investigation, with accident reconstruction being handled by the Maryland State Police.

“This was a very tragic event,” he said. “The accident itself did not occur on the roadway but off the right side, and we’re committed to conducting the best investigation possible to ensure answers and resolution for everyone involved.”

Robinson added that once the state police complete their investigation, the Ocean Pines Police Department will consult with the Worcester County State’s Attorney to determine the next steps.

“It’s a difficult case, and we’re doing everything we can to ensure a thorough investigation,” he said.
