MAAC installs oyster growing cages at Yacht Club

The following is a guest column from the Marine Activities Advisory Committee:

(Nov. 15, 2024) The Marine Activities Advisory Committee (MAAC) has installed an oyster growing cage at the Yacht Club Marina, Dock “D” area. Come check out the young oysters that are filtering the water every hour, and will grow into maturity by sometime next year, when they will become part of two oyster reef areas in the St. Martin River.

The committee is planning to install a sign in the next few months to explain the oyster restoration program and to educate the community on this successful, ongoing project. We currently have more than 100 growers with more than 120 cages, helping to clean the water in the Ocean Pines canals every day.

MAAC member John Cacchio is the “keeper of the cage,” checking it frequently and keeping it free of debris. To communicate with the Marine Activities Advisory Committee, please send an email to [email protected].
