Marine Activities Advisory Committee issues reminder on no wake zones
Tuesday, July 16, 2024
The following is an article from the Marine Activities Advisory Committee:
(July 16, 2024) Your Marine Activities Advisory Committee Reminds Boaters of the Following:
No wake zones:
No wake zones are regulated in Maryland under the Department of Natural Resources
This “minimum wake zone” means you may not operate a vessel in excess of the slowest possible speed necessary to maintain steerage under prevailing conditions
Not to exceed 3 knots (or 3.5 miles per hour)
The beginning and end of a no wake zone is usually indicated by a white and orange floating marker, a row of markers or a large sign on shore
No wake zones have recently been established with new markers from the white horse park boat ramp in Ocean Pines out to entrance of the St. Martin River (with a shoal marker in between the two, noting a shallow area).
Additional no wake markers are also being installed in the Yacht Club area – so be alert!!!
Other regulatory zones are created for special purposes, including:
Slow speed/minimum wake zones
Typically marked as 6 miles per hour (but can be posted for other speeds)
Vessel exclusion zones
These areas call for vessels to pass slowly, although they can be above idle, minimum wake zones
