Maryland Coastal Bays to host presentation on 'Disappearing Islands'

The following is a release from the Maryland Coastal Bays Program:

(April 30, 2024) The Maryland Coastal Bays Program (MCBP) is hosting a presentation on the island loss and the impact on coastal bays wildlife, Friday, May 10 from 3-4:30 p.m. at the Berlin Library on 13 Harrison Avenue.

Islands serve as critical habitat to numerous iconic species found in the Maryland Coastal Bays. Throughout the last several decades, island loss and the impacts it has on species like colonial nesting bird populations have been alarming.

This event will consist of three presentations that will dive deeper into the history of island loss, the iconic species that depend on them, and ways we are working to combat this issue. This will be a free event open to all ages!

Speakers include Amber Ewing an Environmental Studies student from St. Mary's College, MCBP Environmental Scientist Carly Toulan, and MCBP Bird Habitat Coordinator Kim Abplanalp.

Presentations will include initiatives in place to hopefully to restore these once abundant islands and the populations of our colonial nesting birds.
