Mentoring a child one hour a week can make a lifelong impact

The following is a release from Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Eastern Shore:

(October 23, 2024) Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Eastern Shore, Inc. (BBBSES) has partnered with Buckingham Elementary School to provide screened, trained, volunteer mentors (Bigs) for students (Littles) to meet with weekly or by-weekly at school for 30-60 minutes.

BBBSES recruits, trains, and screens Bigs (mentors), while the school identifies Littles (students) that will benefit from a mentoring relationship. Once parents have given their consent, matches meet throughout the school year to do fun activities like play games or enjoy meals, as well as help students with their studies.

“This opportunity has been so rewarding. It allows you to build an amazing relationship with a child in the community who needs support,” states Jessica Holm, a school-based Big.

Students who have participated in the BBBSES program show a high rate of improvement in self-confidence, behavior, and the ability to express feelings. Additionally, 99% of student participants tend to avoid delinquency, substance abuse and gang participation.
