Summer info you should know
Wednesday, June 30, 2021
The following appeared in the summer issue of the Ocean Pines Quarterly Report:
COVID-19 CLINICS
Most clinics provide the Moderna vaccine, a two-dose COVID-19 vaccine for those 18 years old and older, unless specified. Some clinics will also offer the Pfizer and/or Johnson and Johnson vaccine. Clinic dates, locations, and types of vaccine available are posted each week on
WorcesterHealth.org
. Visit the website and follow us @WorcesterHealth on Facebook to stay up to date.
Appointments are recommended to reserve your vaccine, but walk-ups will be accommodated as vaccine supply allows. Please bring your ID. If you have questions call 667-253-2140 or visit
www.worcesterhealth.org
.
The website provides up-to-date information about the Worcester County Health Department’s response to the COVID-19 public health emergency. To view Maryland’s COVID-19 Case Count visit
https://coronavirus.maryland.gov
.
More information on the safety and efficacy of COVID-19 vaccines is available on
covidlink.maryland.gov
. Marylanders can also receive updates from Maryland’s 211 text alert system by texting “MdReady” to 898-211.
All COVID-19 vaccines currently available in the United States are effective at preventing COVID-19 as seen in clinical trial settings.
SEVERE WEATHER
Severe weather events like hurricanes and tropical storms have the potential to significantly impact Worcester County, particularly during hurricane season, which runs from June 1 until Nov. 30. Storms can cause flooding, intense winds, and can damage property and threaten safety, depending on severity. Preparedness before a storm can greatly reduce the risks and damage potential. Taking a few simple, but important, actions now can help you weather the storm and keep you and your family safe.
If your area is evacuated, remember the Five P’s of Evacuation – People, Prescriptions, Papers, Personal Needs, and Priceless Items.
Stay safe during and after a hurricane by avoiding floodwaters on roads, walkways, bridges, and on the ground. Remember: Turn Around, don’t drown. Do not attempt to cross floodwater. The depth of the water is not always obvious; flood waters can hide damaged and washed-out roadways, and only a few inches of moving water can knock an adult off his/her feet. A foot of water can sweep away a large vehicle.
HEAT SAFETY
Extreme heat is a period of high heat and humidity with temperatures above 90 degrees for at least two to three days. In extreme heat your body works extra hard to maintain a normal temperature, which can lead to death. In fact, extreme heat is responsible for the highest number of annual deaths among all weather-related hazards. Remember:
Extreme heat can occur quickly and without warning.
Older adults, children and sick or overweight individuals are at greater risk from extreme heat.
Humidity increases the feeling of heat as measured index.
