Platform Tennis

Court Dedication: On May 25, Ocean Pines platform tennis members dedicated their two recently acquired courts to veterans. Funded by many generous donations of the members, a memorial bench engraved with the words “O.P.P.T.A. Proudly Supports Our Military May 2019” was placed in front of court five. Five flags from each branch of the military were situated behind the bench.

Event organizer Sue Walter was the key speaker. Walter stated, “More than 1.1 million men and women have died in wartime throughout the span of our nation’s history. To include those who were wounded and went missing, that number is closer to 2.9 million. These numbers should truly humble us, as they represent fathers, mothers, husbands, wives, brothers, sisters, and friends. People woven into the fabric of communities across our nation. They were loved, they were mourned, and they were and still are missed.”

Over forty members attended this event which was held to show support and to honor our veterans. The platform tennis members who served and also those who lost a loved one were recognized. The event was followed up by more play on the courts and a cook-out.

Drop-Ins: Drop-in sessions are open to all, members and those wishing to play on a drop-in basis. No advanced sign up is required. The formats vary depending on the number of players. We often play 4 game sessions or first team to win 4 games to keep the wait times short. It is a great way to meet the players. Anyone looking for exercise, fresh air, friendly competition, all-year-round outdoor play & lots of social activities. Paddles & balls will be provided and sneakers are required. Contact Jim Freeman at jimisfreeman@verizon.net or call 215.704.4592.

The Ocean Pines Tennis Club held its annual Points of Compass Tournament on Saturday, June 15. Twenty-four players played on four teams: Wildcats, Tomcats, Alleycats and Aristocats.

The winner of the tournament was the Wildcats team of Shelley Liddell, Ginny Zifchak, Jack Levering, Gary Sirianni, Tom Connor  and Darryl Noble. Darryl Noble and Eric Liddell were partners and winners in their bracket of the men’s competition. The winners of the other men’s bracket, Tom Connor and his partner Jack Levering, won an incredible 19 out of 24 games together. Geri Fasulo and Capri Harrison were the winners of the women’s division.

A full array of tennis and social activities is provided from dawn to dusk by the tennis staff and the membership. Whether you’re looking for early bird drop-in tennis or for play in the evening followed by a group meal, it’s all here for you! Prospective members may get acquainted by playing a couple of times without cost during morning drop-in and attending a tennis social activity. 8 Har-Tru soft tennis courts & 2 hard tennis courts (two lighted for year-round play!)
