The Ocean Pines Pickleball club, in conjunction with the Ocean Pines Association, is hosting a major tournament at the Manklin Meadows Racquet Sports Complex, at 11443 Manklin Creek Road in Ocean Pines, on June 9 -10.
Each day, the tournament will begin at 8:30 a.m. and run until approximately 6 p.m. There is no rain date so the weather must cooperate.
The club invites the public to come out and view competitive pickleball in action all weekend long. The tournament sold out in less than two months, with 180 players from across the nation registering to play pickleball in Ocean Pines. There will be 12 pickleball courts in continuous play, with men’s doubles and women’s doubles on Saturday, June 9 and mixed doubles on Sunday, June 10. Spectators are encouraged to take a seat on the bleachers or bring their own folding chair.
The Ocean Pines Pickleball 2018 Summer Classic is the brainchild of Frank Creamer and Bob O’Malley, who are current officers and founding members (along with Julie Woulfe) of the Ocean Pines Pickleball Club. Planning for the event began last Fall and they have spent countless hours of coordination and preparation as the club wants to showcase Ocean Pines as the perfect destination for outstanding play.
The club also attracted 10 local Tournament Sponsors and four Tournament Contributors that will be acknowledged on banners and t-shirts given out to players and volunteers. Forty-four club volunteers have signed up to assist over that weekend for numerous tasks required to ensure that the tournament runs smoothly.
Pickleball is a family-friendly racquet sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong. Two to four players use a Wiffle ball and composite paddles on a surface half the size of a tennis court with a lower net. It is accessible to experienced and non-experienced players alike.
Ocean Pines offers yearly pickleball memberships for families, individuals, and juniors. Members have access to indoor courts, located at the Ocean Pines Community Center, and the outdoor courts at Manklin Meadows.
