Neighborhood Watch Crime Bulletin #46

Neighborhood Watch Crime Bulletin #46

The spring and summer months are the busiest time of year for our police department. As our community swells seasonally, police calls for service increase. Ocean Pines is much more of a year round community than Ocean City, so we do not see as dramatic a change in service levels, but we do see about a 25 percent increase during the summer months. Some of our most recent activity:

  • Forgery/Theft Arrest:
  • A23 year old female was arrested on warrants for forgery and theft.
  • Domestic Violence Arrests:
  • In three separate incidents, police arrested suspects for domestic violence. In the last incident, both the male and female participants were arrested. Both were highly intoxicated..
  • Child Neglect Arrests:
  • A mother and grandmother were arrested for child neglect of two young children, 6 years and three years of age. Ocean Pines Police work closely with Social Services investigating and prosecuting cases of child abuse/neglect.
  • Theft of Firearms Arrests:
  • Two individuals were arrested for the theft of two shotguns from a vehicle. The suspects were known to the victim, and the weapons were recovered.
  • Child Abuse Arrests:
  • In two separate incidents, police arrested 2 individuals for child abuse, incooperative investigations with Social Services.
  • Burglary/Theft Arrest:
  • A 23 year old female heroin addict was arrested for burglary and theft. She was taking jewelry and selling it to feed her addiction.
  • Minor Drug Arrests:
  • Policemade 4 minor drug offense arrests. Minor arrests are typically for possessionof marijuana and/or drug paraphernalia.
  • Home Improvement Theft Arrest:
  • When you hire someone for minor home improvement repairs, how well do you check them out, first? An individual who was hired for minor repairs stole a valuable ruby ring form the victim’s home. Police were able to solve the crime and recover the ring.
  • Internet Scams:
  • A resident thought she was buying a $32,000 used Yukon vehicle from an Ebay vendor.  It turned out the scammer took the wired money and vanished. Police have active leads we are working on. In another scam, the victims were told that their credit cards could be refinanced at a lower rate and their debt paid off for a fee, over the phone. The fee was stolen and the scammer then used the credit card information to take $18,000 from the victim’s accounts. NEVER provide financial information over the telephone, unless you verify the sender.
  • Memorial Day Ceremony:
  • Beautiful weather greeted the public at our annual Memorial Day Ceremony at the OP Veteran’s Memorial. Our Neighborhood Watch volunteers were there to assist police in parking the hundreds of vehicles that arrived at the ceremony. THANK YOU, Neighborhood Watch!!!!!
  • Drunk Driving Arrests:
  • Police arrested three different individuals for driving while intoxicated. One individual was arrested TWICE in 6 hours!!!! After processing a drunk driver, suspected drunk drivers are released to someone who is not intoxicated. That does not prevent them, however, from leaving the sober individual later, to attempt to drive, again!
