At a recent meeting of the Atlantic Coast Chapter of the Maryland Saltwater Sportfishing Association in Ocean City an MSSA Foundation Scholarship was awarded to one of two local recipients. Receiving the scholarship presented by Tom Nawrocki scholarship chairman was Samantha Pope a recent graduate of Mardela High School.
Since it’s beginning in 1995 the MSSA has awarded more than $225,000 to over 60 young men and women. This is the first time the Atlantic Coast Chapter has had scholarship recipients. The scholarship is awarded to those who will pursue education in the fields of study such as Marine Biology, or other curricula related to the ecology of the Chesapeake Bay, its tributaries, and coastal waters of the mid-Atlantic seaboard.
Samantha who graduated in the top 5% of her class with a 4.43 weighted GPA was also active in sports, the student government association and worked with the Special Olympics program. She will be attending Coastal Carolina University and will major in Marine Science.
