Enjoy Pickleball in Ocean Pines

If you’re new to pickleball or you just want to brush up on your skills, head to Ocean Pines this fall.  The Recreation and Parks Department offers clinics, newcomer instruction and drop-ins for one of America’s fastest growing sports.

Pickleball, which combines elements of tennis, badminton and Ping-Pong, is played with a Wiffle ball and wooden paddles on a surface half the size of a tennis court.  The game is family-friendly and accessible to almost everyone, regardless of age or athletic ability.

Players just learning the sport can drop by for newcomer instruction, offered every Friday from 3-4 p.m. at the Ocean Pines Community Center.  The first visit is free and pre-registration is required; subsequent visits are $5 each.  There will be no instruction on Oct. 31 or Dec. 26.

Additional pickleball drop-in sessions are held every Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday from 1:30-4:30 p.m. at the Ocean Pines Community Center.  Drop-ins at the outdoor Manklin Meadows Racquet Sports Complex, located at 11443 Manklin Creek Road in Ocean Pines, are held Sundays from 1:30-4:30 p.m., Tuesdays and Saturdays from 8:30-11:30 a.m. and Wednesdays from 6-9:30 p.m.  The cost is $5 per session or free with a pickleball membership.

Those interested in learning stroke technique and game strategies are encouraged to sign up for a four-week pickleball clinic beginning Nov. 9.  The clinic will be held for four consecutive Sundays from 4:30-5:30 p.m. at the Ocean Pines Community Center.  Taught by Frank Creamer and Julie Woulfe, this clinic is for ages 12 and older and is $15 per participant.  Equipment will be provided.

Pickleball memberships for individuals and families are also available.  An individual membership is $100 for Ocean Pines residents and $135 for non-residents.  A family membership for Ocean Pines residents is $150.

Ocean Pines pickleball courts and programs are open to the public; membership is not required to participate.   For more information or to register, call the Ocean Pines Recreation & Parks Department at 410-641-7052.  Information regarding additional recreational programs, including an online version of the Ocean Pines Fall 2014 Activity Guide, is available at www.OceanPines.org.
