OPA presents commendation to state champion SDHS wrestling team
Monday, April 22, 2024
(April 22, 2024) The Ocean Pines Association Board on April 20 presented a plaque and commendation to the Stephen Decatur High School Wrestling team for winning their fifth-consecutive state championship.
The squad capped an undefeated Bayside Conference season by downing Damascus 50-22 on Feb. 10 during the Class 2A finals. The streak of five straight titles is the second longest in Maryland wrestling history.
Along with the team state championship, three individual champions were crowned on Feb. 10: Elijah Collick (113 pounds), Gavin Solito (157 pounds), and AJ Johnson (190 pounds). Collick was also named an NHSCA All American.
OPA President Rick Farr presented the commendation, which read:
Whereas, the Stephen Decatur High School Wrestling Team has exhibited unparalleled dedication, resilience, and exceptional sportsmanship throughout a perfect season; and
Whereas, their relentless pursuit of excellence and unwavering team spirit led them to an extraordinary run of victories across several years, clinching their fifth-consecutive wrestling State Championship; and
Whereas, many of the wrestling team members have garnered individual state championship honors over those years, and many of the athletes have also been high academic achievers.
Whereas, the perseverance, talent, and outstanding leadership displayed by each member of the team, coaching staff, and all those who supported them have brought immense pride and honor to the Stephen Decatur High School and the community of Ocean Pines; and their triumph stands as a testament to the power of teamwork, determination, and commitment to achieving greatness both on and off the mat;
Now, therefore, be it proclaimed by the Ocean Pines Board of Directors that we commend and celebrate the remarkable achievement of the Stephen Decatur High School Wrestling Team for their fifth consecutive Maryland Athletic Association Class 2A State Championship.
We extend our heartfelt congratulations to the players, coaches, staff, families, and supporters whose dedication and unwavering support contributed to this remarkable success.
